Sophia Gorriaran didn't wait long to make a statement in the final indoor season of her storied high school career.
On Saturday at the Boston University Season Opener, the senior from Moses Brown School (RI) clocked 4:37.54 for the full mile, which ranks as the sixth-fastest indoor high school performance in history.
The high schooler finished fifth overall behind collegians Flomena Asekol (Alabama, first place), Gabija Galvydyte (Oklahoma State, second place) and Carley Thomas (Washington, fourth place) and ASICS pro Alli Cash (fifth place).
Gorriaran only ranks behind current distance phenom Sadie Engelhardt, as well as outdoor 800m record holder Juliette Whittaker and former high school legends Katie Rainsberger, Alexa Efraimson and Mary Cain on the indoor mile all-time list.
Along with her historic mile showing, Gorriaran also contested the 300m, running 39.51 for fourth overall and finishing as the top high schooler in the event.
Gorriaran continues to add to her middle distance resume that includes a US No. 2 all-time 600m and 800m marks of 1:27.02 and 2:00.58, as well as multiple podium finishes at New Balance Nationals Indoor in events spanning the 400m up to the 800m.
The indoor debut in Boston also comes a month after finishing a short cross country season where she won the Rhode Island cross country state title in 18:18.2 for 5k.
It's of note, too, that Sophia wasn't the only Gorriaran to round the oval in Boston on Saturday. Sophia's brother -- Boston University junior Max Gorriaran -- finished sixth in the 600m in 1:20.93 and helped the Terriers' 4x400m squad to a win in 3:18.06.
