National Regionals Began This Weekend In Boise, Idaho
- - -
The first of nine national regionals began in Boise, Idaho on Saturday, and without surprise, it produced both to, and against, type.
The Team Northwest Regional saw title-contender Tyrone Gorze, a high school senior out of Crater High School and the No. 3 ranked runner on the MileSplit50, take the overall boys championship in resounding fashion, with the Washington recruit going 14:51.60 on the course, a full 12 seconds ahead of second-place Weston Brown of Bozeman (15:03.70).
From there, the race for a national qualifier was on, as the next three athletes would automatically lock-in their berths to Team Nationals on Dec. 3 in Portland.
Brown's teammate, Nathan Neil, was third in 15:05.00, while Portland Jesuit's Jacob Nenow was fourth in 15:05.80 and Coos Bay Marshfield's Alexander Garcia-Silver was fifth in 15:06.20.
As the team race shaped up, however, more spots opened up, giving two more tickets to Sehome's Zack Munson, who finished sixth in 15:13.7, and Rocky Mountain's Landon Heemeyer, who was seventh in 15:24.1.
Which brings us to the team race.
No. 4 Rocky Mountain, No 6 Portland Jesuit and No. 11 Crater all lined up on Saturday.
The end result?
A complete flip-flop of those teams, with Crater taking the overall team title with 75 points, while Jesuit was second with 101 and Rocky Mountain third in 129.
Both Crater and Jesuit locked in automatic qualifiers for their teams to nationals, and with Gorze's and Nenow's top five finishes, also opened up the door for Munson and Heemeyer to get to the dance.
However, that third-spot is where things get tricky. Has Rocky Mountain done enough to be one of the additional teams selected from the at-large candidate pool?
If that is the case -- and we believe it is -- then Heemeyer's finish would cancel out and it would open up the door for Bishop Blanchet's Vincent Recupero. Time will only tell if that will be the case.

On the flip side, the biggest storyline in the girls race was in the team standings.
No. 16 Boise Senior, No. 17 Summit and honorable mention picks Portland Jesuit (No. 36) and Rocky Mountain (No. 47) squared off.
The end result may have given us a huge storyline to follow in December.
Despite being four years removed from their own team title in 2018, could Summit still be considered a possible contender?
The squad from Bend, Oregon, landed the overall victory with 58 points, downing both Portland Jesuit (77) and Boise Senior (153) rather dramatically.
The first three members of the Storm's starting lineup posted finishes in the top 25, while runners No. 4 and 5 were 34th and 50th, respectively.
This team isn't so far removed from that title. The program's four seniors in the top seven were in the eighth-grade when the team last finished first at Team Nationals.
Could those memories push them forward toward this year?
It would only make the championship that much more interesting.
Summit's Barrett Justema was fifth overall in 18:04.8 while Camille Broadbent was 16th and Claire McDonald was 22nd.
Skyline's Anna Callahan won the overall race in 17:35.9, while Logan Hofstee was second in 17:40.3, Nelah Roberts was third in 17:49.8 and Emily Wisniewski was fourth in 17:53.9.
Keira Saavedra, in sixth, also locked up a berth to Team Nationals in sixth in 18:10.4.
