DiCola Wins Anticipated Showdown With Griffith In Pennsylvania
Going in, the 2022 Pennsylvania Class AAA state championships looked to feature one of the most exciting matchups in state meet history.
Two of the top boys to ever take to the course in Pennsylvania -- Hatboro Horsham's Brian DiCola and Butler's Drew Griffith -- would toe the line together for a state title showdown for the ages.
And the competition certainly lived up to the hype.
It was DiCola who came out on top in the Class AAA state championships with a winning time of 15:24.20, with Griffith finishing behind him in 15:35.20 for the state silver.
The duo took the race out hard and didn't look back as it turned into an exciting two-man battle. A decisive move from DiCola with about a half-mile to go helped him take the title in a new Hershey Parkview course record.
The Penn State commit joins former Mount Anderson talent Patrick Anderson as the only two competitors to ever go under 15:30 on the 5k course. Griffith's second-place performance ranks an impressive fourth on the all-time course list.
DiCola's time also translates to a 199 speed rating -- one of the highest ratings seen in the nation this season -- and Griffith's performance equates to a stellar 195 rating as well.
