"Every year recruiting's changed," Pflugrad said. "Now we can at least get on the phone with the strongest girls in the country. Our game has changed a little bit, and we're now competing against the best programs in the country to get girls. But we'll never sacrifice the need to get high character women and people who will really add to the culture."

Shortly after Becca Pflugrad accepted a job in January 2017 as an assistant distance coach at Northern Arizona, she began reaching out to high school athletes. Pflugrad, along with head coach Michael Smith and assistant Jarred Cornfield, had no problem convincing boys recruits to listen to what NAU had to offer. After all, the men's cross country team had won the 2016 NCAA Championship and had a long history of success.
As for the women's team? That was a different story, as the Lumberjacks had not made the NCAA mee...
