Fresh off his win and 5k personal best at The Southern Showcase, Leon (FL) junior Patrick Koon went after another memorable performance at the FSU Invitational.

Koon's effort proved noteworthy alright -- and it was one for the record books.

The 21st-ranked boy in the MileSplit50 rankings took control of the elite boys field against Florida's top talents at what's deemed the pre-state meet,  running crossing the line at Apalachee Regional Park in 14:50.00.

That made for a new venue record and meet record, passing the mark of 14:59.45 set by a former standout from Koon's own school, Sukhi Khosla, in 2013. 

Both Koon and Khosla are the only boys to have ever gone under 15 minutes for 5k at Apalachee.

In the elite girls race, it was the freshman phenom Eliana Black of Cambridge Christian who took the win in 17:39.80 over American Heritage (FL) junior Ashley Fitzgerald, who had the first sub-18-minute 5k race of her career with a finish in 17:53.70.

Looking at the team battles, clear winners emerged in each of the elite races. The boys of Belen Jesuit (FL) continued its impressive season as it easily earned the title with 85 points, which was 62 points ahead of Creekside (FL) in second. A similar dominant team performance stole the show in the girls competition as Ponte Vedra (FL) finished as the only team with a point total under 200 -- 177, to be exact -- to win as a squad.
