Burns Takes Chile Pepper Over In-State Competitor Wilde
- - -
It was another locked in effort from one of the nation's top runners on Saturday.
Southern Boone County's (MO) Connor Burns took home the win with a stellar 14:32.30 5K performance, good for a new U.S. No. 3 mark and a nearly 25-second personal best at the distance.
The Oregon signee and high school senior narrowly beat out Liberty North's (MO) Sage Wilde, who took second in 14:36.20. That now ranks Wilde fourth nationally for 5K this season.
In total, six boys dipped under 15 minutes in what proved to be a nationally-competitive race.
Looking at team scores, it was meet favorite Carroll (TX) who took the win with 75 points as the seventh-ranked team in the nation made a dominant statement. But don't look know, but Bentonville (AR) may be a team to watch as the season unfolds. The Arkansas-based program shined, too, producing a 15:44 average and a 35-second spread, which led to 161 points.
Burns may have produced the show-stopper headline at Chile Pepper, but the girls elite race also saw impressive competition.
Bentonville (AR) junior Haley Loewe earned the win by just two seconds over Plano West's (TX) Haley Harper, clocking 17:20.50 to Harper's 17:22.50.
On the team side, it was Lucas Lovejoy, ranked 15th on the MileSplit50 rankings, who earned a slight advantage over Carroll, tallying 67 points.
