No. 3: Aaron Sahlman
- - -
School: Newbury Park (CA)
Year: Senior, Class of 2023
2021-22 Notable Finishes: Sixth at RunningLane Cross Country Championships in a 5k PR of 14:14.38; Second at the Woodbridge Cross Country Classic with a three-mile personal best of 13:42.30. Also ran 1:48.91 for 800m, 4:01.34 in the one mile and 8:48.28 in the two mile during the outdoor season, all of which ranked among the US top 15 times for each event.
Analysis: Last year, it was his brother Colin who took the headlines as the fastest high school distance runner in the country. Now, enter Aaron Sahlman in 2022, Colin's younger brother who could potentially add another individual national title home to the family name.
He's part of a Newbury Park squad that had such a storied season last year, and he finished sixth last year behind his teammates at RunningLane with a 5k personal best of 14:14.38. But his 13:42.30 three-mile performance for second at Woodbridge last September shows he has the capability on any given day to upset the team's top runners Lex and Leo Young.
Sahlman's fitness also translated quite well to the track a few months ago, running a slew of nationally-reputable times. That included times of US No. 9 1:48.91 in the 800m, US No. 11 4:01.34 in the mile and US No. 12 8:48.28 for the two mile.
He may be Newbury Park's third runner, but don't let that fool you. Sahlman has the makings to be an individual national champion, and push his Newbury Park squad to a historic run this season.
