No. 7: Connor Burns
- - -
School: Southern Boone County (MO)
Year: Senior, Class of 2023:
2021-22 Notable Finishes: First at the Missouri 3A State Cross Country Championships in 15:13.50; Second at the Chile Pepper Cross Country Festival with a 5k PR of 14:56.30. Also ran 3:58.83 for in the mile at the HOKA Festival of Miles and 8:45.00 in the two mile at Brooks PR Invitational during the outdoor season.
Analysis: Burns made a name for himself during the 2022 track season by becoming one of the five boys to break the elusive four-minute barrier in the mile in June. But beyond the track, he holds great talent at the longer distances on the cross country course and could be one to contend for an individual national title this fall.
He enters his senior year with a 5k personal best of 14:56.30 as well as bragging rights as the defending Missouri 3A state champion. His PR from last season ranks him as the 32nd fastest returner for 5k, but Burns could very well improve in 2022. He'll be part of a talented Missouri distance pool, which includes the likes of 5k cross country state record holder Andrew Hauser (Rock Bridge) and sub-15:00 racer Sage Wilde (Liberty North), who both compete in the 5A division.
His mile speed - 3:58.83 speed clocked at the HOKA Festival of Miles, to be exact - could likely translate to much a faster 5k time this season, and a PR of 8:45.00 for two miles from the outdoor season shows he has the endurance to make those strides at the longer distances. It's also worth pointing out that Burns didn't participate in any postseason cross country meets in 2021, but surely be on the lookout for him to join a national field this season in December.
