No. 8: Rocky Hansen
- - -
School: Christ School (NC)
Year: Senior, Class of 2023
2021-22 Notable Finishes: First at the NCISAA 4A State Cross Country Championships in 15:21.80. Also ran a US No. 9 4:00.76 to win the mile at RunningLane Track Championships and a US No. 2 8:46.97 for first place in the two mile at New Balance Outdoor Nationals.
Analysis: He's an athlete that burst onto the national scene come the end of outdoor season, and Rocky Hansen out of Christ School (NC) will look to carry over that same breakout mentality into the fall cross country season.
Hansen didn't really turn heads nationally during the cross country season in 2021, but he put together solid performances. He was the sixth fastest boy in North Carolina last year with his season best 5k time of 15:21.80, which earned him an NCISAA 4A state title in cross country.
But then came the track season.
Seemingly out of nowhere, Hansen entered the outdoor season and ran a 4:00.76 in the mile and 8:46.97 for two miles, ranking among the top 10 performances in the country in each respective event. That electric mile performance also earned him a state record, surpassing the previous all-time mark held by Craig Engels.
Hansen came up clutch on the national stage, too, winning the 1,600m at the RunningLane Track Championships and the two-mile at New Balance Nationals.
Clearly based on his track season alone, Hansen's talent and fitness compares to that of the top guys, so be looking for Hansen to see his 5k time significantly improve and morph into a true national title contender on the grass.
