Year: Senior, Class of 2023
2021-22 Notable Finishes: 12th at RunningLane Cross Country Championships in a 5k PR of 14:24.30; Second at Team Nationals Southwest Regional meet in 14:47.70; Second at Utah Class 5A State Cross Country Championships. Also ran outdoor personal bests of 4:09.94 in the mile for fourth at the Arcadia Invitational and 9:12.52 in the 3,200m to win at the Utah 5A State Track and Field Championships.
Analysis: Utah distance running makes for quite the fierce competition, but it's none other than Orem senior Tayson Echohawk who leads the way as one of the fastest cross country racers in the state and in the entire country.
Echohawk enters 2022 fall season with the sixth-fastest returning 5k time of 14:24.30, which came at RunningLane Nationals last December and earned him a 12th place finish. But that marquee placement at nationals didn't come out of the blue, as his high school career has been defined by very impressive consistency.
In 2021, for example, Echohawk opened up the cross country season with an invitational race time of 15:24.60. By the end of the season, he took a full minute off that early season time when he took the course at RunningLane. He continually shows steady improvement from the beginning of competition season to the end, making him a competitor to look out for in the later fall months.
Echohawk also had a stellar track season with a personal best of 4:09.94 in the mile at Arcadia and a 5A state championship win in the 3,200m in 9:12.52.
He's not alone in Utah, though, as he's developed an intriguing matchup with Liam Heninger (Mountain View), who finished fourth at the Utah 5A state meet and 28th at RunningLane last fall. However, Echohawk certainly has the ability to improve throughout the season, as seems to be his forte, and can become one of the fastest boys in Utah and the nation.
