Analysis: Four returners are back from a team that barely inched by Portland Jesuit at the OSAA Class 6A Championships a season ago, including senior Ella Thorsett, who finished sixth, and senior Barrett Justema, who was ninth -- the state meet was decided by three points, 55-58. It's no surprise that Summit, national team champions in 2018, have depth: That characteristic has been a hallmark of the program's success over the last few seasons. 

But Thorsett and Justema could be tapping into something special, too. The pair furthered their seasons last year at the Garmin RunningLane Championships -- the only duo from Summit to do so. That commitment and desire could spell good news for 2022, especially considering Summit returns with an average time of 18:13 between its returning five. 

Biggest Question: How will Summit fare against state Class 6A rival Jesuit? 

These two programs have been going at it over the last several years, though Summit has had Jesuit's number since 2018: The Bend-based girls program has won three straight championships -- there was no state championship in 2020. Jesuit's last title came in 2017.
