Woodlands Outlasts Atascocita At Friday Night Lights
- - -
All boxing matches start somewhere, and perhaps this race on Friday was the start of several more over the 2022 season for The Woodlands and Atascocita.
It's clear as day that these two Houston-area programs are gunning for one another this fall.
So what happened in their first matchup?
The old guard stood its ground.
In one of the weekend's top matchups, No. 9 The Woodlands outlasted No. 22 Atascocita -- both programs are nationally ranked to begin the season -- by seven points, as the Highlanders scored their first five runners in the first 25 spots on the Bear Branch Park course.
While Atascocita produced the top team scorer -- Oliver Maldonado was second overall on the 4K course in 12:28.2 -- The Woodlands scored the next two and was solid from four to five. Atascocita went two-15-18-20-26.
The result? It was certainly an entertaining race. Austin Vandegrift's Kevin Sanchez, Texas' top runner to begin the season, won the overall race in 12:22.4.
But the team battle took top billing. Race one went to The Woodlands, but we know this one isn't over.
