2021-22 Notable Finishes: 27th at RunningLane Cross Country Championships in a 5k PR of 14:39.03. Also ran a PR of 8:54.93 for the two mile at Brooks PR Invitational to place fifth.
Analysis: Munson enters the cross country season as a boy with perhaps some of the most potential of any male distance runner in the country.
That designation comes in large part due to the fact that Munson only raced three times last year as a junior during cross country. However, the Sehome (WA) star definitely made the most of his very limited racing schedule. He ran a personal best of 14:39.03 at RunningLane to finish 27th in the gold field and break 15 minutes for the first time in his career, following up his previous 5k performances of 15:17.50 at the Ash Creek XC Festival and 15:42.30 at Team Nationals Northwest Regionals.
He had his best performance of the outdoor season at the Brooks PR Invitational where he finished fifth in the two mile with a time of 8:54.93. With that kind of speed and endurance at the two-mile distance, Munson likely should carry that same skill up to the 5k for cross country this season.
But the key to Munson's success could be how many races he plans to contest this fall. Potentially, if Munson is able to race more this season against national-caliber talent and get more cross experience under his belt, he could be a dark horse candidate that people don't see coming in postseason competition.
