Analysis: Southerland won 80 percent of the races she competed in during the 2021 cross country season. During the season, she ran a personal 5K best of 17:27.90 in September.
At the IHSAA State Cross Country Championships, she finished as the silver medalist. Later on that year, she was the sixth fastest runner at the Team Nationals Midwest Regional Championships.
During the spring, she finished second at RunningLane Track Championships in both the 800m and mile. In both of those races, she set lifetime bests of 2:08.64 and 4:45.03. A week later, she became the champion in the 3,200m with a personal best of 10:22.82 at the IHSAA State Track and Field Championships. At that same meet, she was the second fastest girl in the 1,600m.
