No. 2: Niwot (CO)
- - -
Analysis: The defending national champions from the Garmin Cross Country Championships return five runners from that team, including Mia Prok, Madison Shults and Bella Nelson. All three of those runners broke 17:30 for 5K last season.
Based on returning PRs, the Cougars are the fastest team in the country. Better yet, the squad remains a strong pack, with five girls with PRs under 18 minutes for 5K. At last year's state championships, Niwot was just five points away from a nearly perfect 15. The team also won the Sweepstakes race at Desert Twiligh and St. Vrain.
Biggest Question: Can Niwot win the biggest race of the year (again)?
Hard to argue against the team that won the biggest race of the year as the best team. But perhaps this year, the Cougars will at least get that opportunity.
Schedule:
Regional Championships, October
State Championships, October
Regionals, November
Nationals, December
X Factor: Niwot's new blood.
The Boulder-based program usually holds a large team, which means there's a lot of talent circulating. This year, for instance, a well-known Olympian's daughter is a member of the girls team.
