2021-22 Notable Finishes: Seventh at RunningLane Cross Country Championships in a 5k PR of 14:18.43; First at the Team Nationals Northeast Regional in 15:43.60.
Analysis: On cross country's biggest stage last year at the RunningLane Cross Country Championships, Cox shot for the stars, and it certainly turned out well for him. Now as a senior in 2022, he will look to build upon his success story from last year that saw him nab a perhaps surprising top-10 finish at nationals.
Cox enters with the fourth-fastest returning 5k time of 14:18.43, which came in his breakout moment at RunningLane to earn seventh place. He entered that pivotal race in Huntsville as a virtually unknown talent nationally, but he left with a one fastest 5k cross country times recorded in 2021. Prior to RunningLane, he had only broken 15 minutes once before, which came at the NHIAA State Meet of Champions a year earlier in 2020.
It will be interesting to see how he returns to the course this fall because we didn't see much of him on the track come indoor and outdoor season. If he's healthy and the upward trend in cross country continues for Cox -- much like last season that culminated with the impressive RunningLane moment -- he could peak at the end of the 2022 season and be considered in the running for an individual national championship.
