No. 22: Atascocita (TX)

Analysis: This year, the Houston area is going to have two star-programs dueling it out. And that's where Atasocita comes in. Hailing from Humble, the squad finished fourth in the UIL Class 6A title race last year. 

But based on returning 5K PRs, this team is the 17th-fastest coming back in 2022 -- better than The Woodlands. Senior Oliver Maldonado, who was 30th in the state championship last November, will likely lead this team from the front. What also helps is a relatively small spread from 1-to-5: On paper, it currently stands at about 54 seconds. Can they take over Houston XC? We can't wait to find out. 

Biggest Question: Can Atascocita somehow make a run for the UIL Class 6A title?

This will be the team's quest all season-long ... and we're here for it. But to unseat either Southlake Carroll or The Woodlands? That will be a tall order. 

A year ago, Atascocita was 37 points out from The Woodlands' runner-up finish at state and 67 from Carroll's winning score of 65. This year, Atascocita is clearly a better team. But it's one thing to be good on paper: Just how will this team respond when they have to prove it?
