No. 4: New Orleans Jesuit (LA)
- - -
Analysis: Big expectations follow this team in 2022. The returning Louisiana Class 5A champions -- who won that title despite being displaced from Hurricane Ida just months earlier -- proved last year they could handle adversity. Under the guidance of head coach Cullen Doody, this squad came ready to compete in every meet they entered and developed from the top-down, earning the respect of their state and the admiration of a lot of other programs.
So, the bar has been raised. Jesuit is considered a top five team with a chance to compete for a top five placement at the national level. The team has seven returners back from last year's team.
Biggest Question: How will Jesuit handle the expectations of a season where they're expected to be the best team in Louisiana history?
No team in Louisiana has ever been this good this early. Moreover, no team in Louisiana has ever had the expectations of this one. That's pressure. How this squad deals with daily, weekly and monthly maintenance routines will come to define their entire season, and one that could end up in the record books.
Schedule:
The Southern Showcase, September
District Championships, October
Louisiana State Championships, November
Nationals, December
X Factor: The development of Michael Vocke.
Spend any time around Vocke and you'll understand his head-space: He wants to be the guy who can be trusted to win a big race, who can captain his teammates through the thick and thin and a teammate and performer who does all the little things right. Vocke is not only a details-guy, but he's passionate about this sport and wants to get better. Before last season, the Jesuit record books only had a handful of guys under 16 minutes for three miles all-time. Today, the entire starting seven is under 15:40 for 5K. Vocke has an opportunity to be the school's best of all-time. So 2022 will be important for that career roadmap.
