The fall months are often a time for the nation's best track and field recruits to make their college commitments.

But for some star athletes, they've already crossed that bridge. 

Harding University's (NC) Akala Garrett is one such individual. The North Carolina native announced back in April her commitment to the Texas Longhorns, one of the preeminent hurdle programs in the United States.

Although Garrett isn't a recent commit, it's important to step back and evaluate the potential impact of her choice. Early this month, she became a World U20 champion in the 400m hurdles at the tender age of 17. On top of that, she owns the world's fastest U18 and U20 times.
