50.68.

What else is there to say?

There's breaking a record, and then there's smashing a record. When Sydney McLaughlin crossed the finish line on Friday in the women's 400mH final nearly a full second under her previous world record of 51.41, she left the track and field community stunned.

For comparison, 50.68 would have put McLaughlin seventh in the open women's 400m final contested just an hour prior.

Some have begun deeming McLaughlin's race one of the greatest track and field performances of all-time. Nonetheless, the historic run made for an exciting concluding weekend of competition at the 2022 World Outdoor Championships.

U.S. fans were treated to McLaughlin's jaw-dropping race, as well as countless other top finishes among U.S. performers and relay teams. The weekend saw seven individuals representing Team USA earn podium finishes, along with three relay team wins to make for one of the most dominant country performances in world championship history.

For those that followed McLaughlin in high school, it comes as no surprise to see her rewriting history in the women's hurdles. The 22-year-old competed at the 2016 Olympic Games in her specialty event the summer before her senior year at Union Catholic (NJ) and owns national high school records in the outdoor 300mH and 400mH. She also holds all-time records in the indoor 300m and 400m.

Other former high school stars made a significant impact for the U.S. to close out the championships, including notable young talents Athing Mu (first in women's 800m) and Michael Norman (first in men's 400m).

Scroll below to learn more about what McLaughlin and other U.S. world medalists accomplished in high school and take a look at final full results from the impressive 2022 World Outdoor Championships.
