Going into Thursday's competition at Hayward Field at the 2022 World Outdoor Championships, all eyes turned to the men's 200m, expecting a showdown for the ages between U.S. sprint veteran Noah Lyles and 18-year-old star Erriyon Knighton.
The race certainly unfolded as many had hoped, complete with a U.S. podium sweep and a new American record.
The trio of Americans comprised of Lyles, Knighton and Kenny Bednarek commanded the race and never looked back, with Lyles dominantly leading the way across the line.
Lyles' winning time of 19.31 not only earned him another 200m world title, but broke Michael Johnson's long-held American record set in 1996.
It makes him one of the fastest men to ever race the 200m, behind only Jamaican greats Usain Bolt and Yohan Blake.
But for many who followed Lyles in high school, his record-setting performance may not come as much of a surprise, as the young U.S. sprint sensation began setting all-time national bests as a junior athlete. In his signature 200m event at the 2016 Olympic Trials, a young Lyles clocked 20.09 to set the high school American record that no one has touched since.
Other former high school stars came away with medals and top-eight performances over the past few days of World Championship competition, including the three men's 200m medalists and U.S. thrower Valarie Allman in the women's discus.
Scroll below to see just how elite the men's 200m medalists and other U.S. podium finishers thus far in the competition were as junior athletes, as well as the most recent compiled results list from the championships.
