For the first time since Week 2 of the National Performer of the Week Indoor Series, we saw a field event athlete win the weekly honor on Friday.

A big congrats has to go out to Casey Helm, the Madison (KS) High School senior and Princeton recruit who unloaded for a U.S. No. 1 discus mark of 214 feet, 1 inch on April 29 at the Madison Invitational.

That throw also set a new Kansas outdoor record and became just the fifth -- he's now the sixth -- time any athlete in the state had gone over 200 feet in the event.

Moreover?

He won Week 6 of the National Performer of the Week poll, grabbing over 46-percent of the tallies en route to a dominant win over the rest of the nominees. Oh yeah, and Helm is doing that in Class 1A of Kansas.

A big kudos goes out to Casey on the win, and to his continued success this season.

Now let's move on to Week 7 action.

This weekend began, in earnest, the start of state championships across the United States.

We will recognize a winner every week in this poll, with nominations handed out on Monday. The votes will close on Friday and the winner will be announced the following Monday.
