It had all the makings of a national championship race.
On Saturday at the MVP Vibe Fest Chicagoland, it was a true slugfest between Normal Community's (IL) Allison Ince, Huntington North's (IN) Addy Wiley and Park Tudor's (IL) Gretchen Farley.
All three found themselves lockstep through 400 meters.
And then Wiley, the nation's top outdoor miler of 2021, made a move at 450m, surging past Ince around the curve.
She only widened the gap with 200 meters to go.
But then Ince, the reigning Brooks PR champion in the 800m turned it on late, kicking past Wiley in the final 50 meters.
Ince made up the difference within a second, legging past Wiley in the final moments for a U.S. No. 9 indoor time of 2:10.11.
Wiley was second in a U.S. No. 10 time of 2:10.27. Farley was third in a U.S. No. 19 mark of 2:12.55.
