*Darius Kipyego won his second 800m outdoor state title
- - -
It was a busy weekend for athletes at the Rhode Island State Track and Field Championships. Meet records and personal bests fell across the competition.
Sophia Gorriaran, one of the fastest middle-distance athletes in the state and country, decided to opt-out of the state championships to focus on the U.S. Olympic trials. She finished 19th in the first round with a 2:02.26.
St. Raphael's Darius Kipyego won his fourth individual title this weekend.
This weekend, Kipyego clocked a 1:54.04 to win his second 800m state title in his career. His goal going into the meet was running a 1:52, but according to Kipyego, the windy conditions weren't ideal.
However, his season isn't over yet.
He's looking to have another shot at running a sub 1:50 in the 800m later this season before heading off to Iowa State to begin his collegiate career.
