There are sure to be fireworks when you have two of the best milers in not only the state of Georgia but the entire county together in one race.
That's just what we got to witness on Saturday night in Marietta, Georiga at the Wingfoot Night of Champions.
The race went out with three guys all pushing the pace, Mary Persons' (GA) Justin Wachtel, East Coweta's (GA) Logan Ray, and Marietta's (GA) Kamari Miller. One lap into the race Miller had worked his way to the front. At the halfway point it was clear Miller was in control of the pace and the race.
Throughout the third lap, Miller kept his foot on the gas and opened the gap to around 5-seconds on the rest of the field. With 300m to go through the momentum started to shift.
Miller seemed to be maintaining pace well but it was clear Wachtel had something left in the tank. Wachtel found another gear and was starting to hit the gas. With 200m to go, he kicked it into overdrive.
With 100m to go Wachtel had closed the gap and was beginning to make the pass on Miller. Miller tried to respond but was unable to hold off the charging Wachtel who closed his last lap in approximately 56-seconds.
Both seniors would post huge PR's with Wachtel earning the win in 4:08.29 and Miller just behind in 4:09.17. Their times rank US No. 4 and US No. 8 respectively.
