It's been a wild and bumpy year for those in the Pacific Northwest, with restrictions and limitations on a vast majority of high school cross country and outdoor track and field races.
But on Wednesday in Olympia, Washington, a selection of the region's fastest distance runners lined up for a legitimate contest.
And what a result it was.

Olympia (WA) junior Ethan Coleman covered the distance in a new US No. 4 time of 8:49.57, while Camas (WA) junior Evan Jenkins followed in 8:50.77.
Coleman's time was fourth-best in Washington history, only behind James Mwaura (8:46.87), Carl Moe (8:47.84) and Matthew Watkins (8:48.84). Jenkins' time was fifth-best.
A total of 11 athletes would finish the race inside the country's top 50 times in the 3,200m.
Kamiakin's Isaac Teeples, a Nike Cross Nationals qualifier in 2019, was third overall in 8:58.74, while Sehome's Zack Munson was fourth in 9:00.06 and Jesuit's Jack Bennett was fifth in 9:02.75.
Previous to the competition, Coleman had suspected the race could be one of the best in Washington state. He had previously run 9:01 in a smaller local meet.
"I'm going to do what I know I can do. I am not so much worried about the outcome as much as I am about the process of racing," Coleman told Dyestat before the race. "The most important thing is I'm going to go out there and run my race. I'm going to race those guys, I'm going to compete and the times will come."
