VIRGINIA BEACH, VIRGINIA -- The very first lap was a statement.
Sydney Thorvaldson was not playing around in the 2-mile on Saturday at adidas Indoor Nationals.
The Rawlins (WY) High School senior, ranked No. 1 in the MileSplit50 and firmly entrenched at the No. 2 position in high school history at 2-miles, went out in 36 seconds.
It was right there and then that you got the sense that Thorvaldson was trying to stake her claim on that 9:38 national record, the one that was last achieved by Mary Cain in 2013.
And within a minute, no one was even close to Thorvaldson. Her 800m split was 2:20. Then she was through 1,600m in 4:48. Thorvaldson was on pace.
But while the race ultimately came back to her in the final seven laps -- she ran no faster than 38 seconds in six out of the last seven 200m splits -- there was no doubt she proved her point. Thorvaldson closed hard and earned her latest victory in 9:55.09.
Few are in Thorvaldson's league right now.
The win was the Wyoming teenager's 32nd straight victory since 2019, and her second sub-10 of 2021 tied her with North Rockland graduate Katelyn Tuohy as being the only athlete to have two similar marks in the same season.
Tuohy, ultimately, has more for her career with three -- she ran 9:51.05 in 2019, plus recoded two sub-10s in 2018.
But Thorvaldson's top two peformances are also faster than any high schoolers in history.
She now has the No. 2 and No. 4 all-time.
