VIRGINIA BEACH, VIRGINIA -- It is safe to say that, for those who were in the building at the adidas Indoor Nationals on Friday for the championship boys 5K, it was the most entertaining race of the night.
From the start, Benzie Central's (MI) Hunter Jones and Tatnall's (DE) Declan McDonnell went out aggressively over the first mile and ballooned to a 70m lead on the rest of the field.
But over 25 laps, Valor Christian's (CO) Ty Garrett had his sights on slowly closing the gap. Throughout the course of the race, as Garrett would later say, he would do the "Prefontaine Head-Look" to keep a close out on where he was compared to Jones and McDonnell.
Then, with 1,200m left to go in the race, it was evident that Garrett had his chance, with the Colorado athlete making a major move -- along with Jake Gelfand -- with 800m left to go.
We had a race on our hands.
Garrett took the lead from McDonnell, and then the jets started to roar as the crowd -- the venue only allowed a few fans inside the building to meet strict capacity limits -- started cheering them on.
The bell lap brought everyone to their feet.
Jones tried making on a move on the curve and wasn't able to. He tried one more time as he slingshot off the curve and just finished ahead of Garrett.
Jones won the event in 14:49.76 and Garrett finished second with a 14:50.57.
