How have athletes progressed at either (or both) of the 400m and 500m distances year-over-year?

Following recent stats dives (below) into the short sprints and the 200m and 300m distances, we continue today with longer sprints.

On the boys side, Luis Rubio of Montgomery Academy showed almost a 12-second improvement in the 400m. He opened his 2020-2021 indoor season with a personal best of 1:12.32 at the Holiday Invitational #2. Ethan Waugh of James W. Robinson had a similar journey with improving his 500m by 12 seconds. 

Lakewood's (OH) Abby Sacha, meanwhile, ran a personal best to start her indoor season in the 400m. She clocked a 1:09.09, while last year her fastest time was 1:24.22. Hannah Soberman of McLean (VA) ran a 1:34.06 at the McLean South Lakes Yorktown in mid-January to set a new p...
