VIRGINIA BEACH, VIRGINIA -- Despite admitting later 'I had no idea how to run this,' Thomas Worthington's Justin Braun managed to claim a thrilling win at 500 meters on Sunday at The VA Showcase, earning a down-to-the-line win in 1:02.67.
That mark, the eighth-fastest of all-time and a new US No. 1, is now also Ohio's all-time best performance at the distance, and his second such performance in consecutive days. On Saturday, Braun posted a time of 33.24 in the 300m, earning a new all-time Ohio No. 1.
IMG Academy's Ashton Schwartzman posted an identical time of 1:02.67, his loss coming down to the thousandths of a second.
Overall, this was Justin Braun's first time competing in the 500m. He made his move with 200m to go and pushed to the front as he entered the last turn. He won the race by .008.
