Texas' Best Private School Runner Takes Downs Texas' Top Public School Runner At The Desert Twilight Festival
In a showdown that would help to define Ben Shearer's season, Texas' top private school runner went toe-to-toe with Texas' top public school runner, Judson Greer, on a night of spectacular finishes in Arizona.
Shearer ultimately beat Greer at the Desert Twilight Festival on Oct. 2, and in the process would produce a new career best 5K time of 14:39.60.
It was a thrilling race, and a rather surprising finish.
Few could have expected Shearer, a senior at The Woodlands Christian (TX), to beat Greer, who had come off a junior season that saw him finish fifth at Foot Locker Nationals.
Greer had beaten Shearer three times previously: Twice at the Team South Regional in 2018 and 2019 and again at Team Nationals in2 019.
But perhaps Shearer just raced better on this day.
Greer crossed the line six seconds later in 14:45.81 and would eventually go the rest of the season undefeated before winning his third straight UIL Class 6A title.
Shearer, meanwhile, raced just two more times across 2020 and would close his high school career with his second straight TAPPS title in 15:32.00.
