Southbury Pomperaug's Kate Wiser, a senior in the Class of 2021, won the Northeast HS Club Cross Country Championships on Saturday in Montgomery, New York, producing a winning time of 16:46.8.
A massive PR by nearly 50 seconds, Wiser broke 17 minutes for 5K for the first time and in doing so took down nationally-ranked runners like No. 4 Brooke Rauber, Sydney Masciarelli -- who was ranked as high as No. 11 in Week 5 of the MileSplit50 -- and Karrie Baloga. Wiser's time is the eighth-fastest of the fall season thus far.
Rauber finished second overall in 17:00.3, while Masciarelli was third in 17:20.1 and Baloga was fifth in 17:49.3. New Windsor's Chloe Scrimgeour was fourth overall in 17:43.7.
Wiser, however, is no surprise.
The Connecticut harrier is a two-time All-Ameican at Foot Locker Nationals who finished ninth and seventh at the championship in back-to-back years, respectively.
Her performance on Saturday once again showed a talent not to be slept on, as Wiser also picked up a 164 speed rating, the highest of her career and fourth-highest in 2020 so far.
