LAS VEGAS, NEVADA -- The West Coast AAU Junior Olympic Games are officially in the books. Athletes, coaches, officials and spectators endured another absolute scorcher on Sunday at the Pearson Center facility with temperatures hovering around 110 degrees for much of the day.
There was heat on the track, as well, though, in the way of fast times. Jason Parra, from the Long Beach Flyers, set the tone, as he kicked the day off with a 9:56.52 effort to earn the 3,000m win for 14 year-olds and the events that followed did not disappoint.
Standout performers during Day 3 action included Udodi Onwuzurike and Lucheyona Weaver in the oldest age-bracket (17-18), as well as the always exciting 9-year-old from the Pacific Coast ShockWaves, Victor Jaimez-Solorio.
Onwuzurike and Luncheyona both punctuated their West Coast Games experience by pocketing wins in the 100 and 200 contests. Onwuzurike, who reps Prime Time Performance out of Michigan, posted times of 10.60 and 21.12 and Floridian, Luncheyona secured her victories with marks of 12.10 and 24.29, respectively.
Jaimez-Solorio complemented his 400 and 1500 triumphs on Saturday with a first-place showing in the 800 on the final day of competition. He clocked 2:25.54 over two laps of the track.
Also of note, one of the top performers during Day 2, Makeriah Harris kept it rolling on Sunday. The Louisiana native secured victories in the 100 and 200 with 12.47 and 24.88 marks.
