In April, Gatorademade a decision. The organization, which had been recognizing high school student-athletes at the culmination of each sports season for the past three decades, would continue to honor excellence in 2020 despite the cancellation of the track and field season.
If nothing else, Gatorade revealed, this year's recognitions would honor all those athletes whose drive and determination would be undeterred, despite an unprecedented year.
On Thursday, Gatorade revealed the first of four announcements, beginning with the recognition of state-by-state girls winners for the season. In ensuing weeks, boys state-by-state winners and boys and girls national Player of the Year honors will be given out.
Gatorade took into account past success, personal record performances, and other factors when determining their winners. Important notes: Gatorade recognized athletes who ran for their high schools over the past or current calendar year. Gatorade's awards program is also branded 'Player of the Year,' regardless of sport.
