SAN TAN VALLEY, ARIZONA -- Muskegon Western Michigan Christian's Abby Vanderkooi turned up the heat in the elite section of the girls 3,200m meter run on Saturday at the Desert Dream Last Hurrah Invitational, pulling away after the first mile for a new Michigan state sophomore record of 10:02.56.
Vanderkooi's performance marked a 31-second outdoor improvement from her best of 10:33 a year ago. And her final four splits were indicative of just how good she felt in the final four laps, going 72, 72, 73 and 71.
But the Michigan sophomore wasn't the only runner to score a big personal record. Desert Vista's (AZ) Grace Ping logged a 25-second best, finishing second overall in 10:25.45. Bellarmine Prep's (WA) Ella Borsheim also went under 10:30, logging a 31-second personal best of 10:29.49.
