Throwback Thursday: Nickolas Mirabelli Captures State Record

During his high school track and field campaign, Nickolas Mirabelli showed improvements in the javelin. Each year he got stronger and placed better at his state championship meet.

As a freshman in 2015, his furthest throw was 158-10. His furthest throw as a sophomore jumped to 178-7. The pivotal moment for him was the transition to his junior year, when he improved to 213-5, which was the fifth furthest throw in the nation.

Then, as a senior, each throw was consistently over 202-4 and yet he still hadn't won a state title.

But in 2018 he stepped on to the grassy runway at his NJSIAA State Meet of Champions meet. As he launched the javelin in the air, the crowd and Mirabelli knew it was a huge throw as they waited eagerly for the mark. The athletes, spectators, and Mirabelli jumped in celebration when it was revealed that he threw a New Jersey state record of 227-10.

The Rancocas Valley Reg HS' (NJ) graduate now competes for Texas A&M and has improved his personal best to 234-2. He placed seventh at the 2019 Southeastern Conference Championships and third at the USATF U20 Outdoor Championships.
