In honor of the historical heat-up of state championship season, we throw it back to six years ago when Cherryville's (NC) senior Trentavis Friday flexed his muscle at the NCHSAA 1A State Championship, winning both the 100m, 200m, 400m and 4x400m.
Friday won the 100m in 10.59 (-3.7) and the 200m in 20.95 (-4.0). In his 200m, he exploded out of the blocks from lane four and immediately made up the stagger on the athletes to his outside. By the time he came off the turn, he had the lead. He pumped his arms down the straight away and crossed the finish line a second and a half ahead of Cordell France of Mount Airy.
In a span of a year, Friday moved up in the rankings in the 200m from 28th in 2013 with a 21.10 (0.9) to the nation's leader with a 20.33 (0.0) in 2014. He also finished his senior year as the nation's leader in the 100m with a 10.00 (1.6).
Friday won gold in the 200m and on the 4x100m for the U.S. at the 2014 World Junior Championships before heading off to Florida State. He competed for the Seminoles for one year before turning pro to prep for the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials. He did not advance out of the 100m prelims.
