Newbury Park High School cross country coach Sean Brosnan felt that his star athlete was ready for a special race on Saturday night at the Woodbridge Cross Country Classic.
Nico Young did not let him down.
After reviewing times in the overall MileSplit database, we've determined that the Newbury Park (CA) High School senior ran the nation's fastest 3-mile effort of all-time on Saturday, winning the boys Sweepstakes race in 13:39.70 on the SilverLakes course in Norco, California. It was an overall meet record by 15.3 seconds and gave Young his second straight Woodbridge title.
No high school boy has ever gone under 13:40 in cross country for 3-miles until Young.
Of the 15 boys who have secured efforts under 14 minutes, six have come at Woodbridge and and six more have come at the Illinois State Cross Country Championships at Detweiller Park.
Craig Virgin owns the next fastest time in history, having secured an effort of 13:50.60 at the state championships in Illinois in 1972.
There have been four iterations of Woodbridge courses, with the race moving to the SilverLakes course in 2016. Young surpassed Armijo (CA) High School graduate Luis Grijalva's record of 13:58.0, which was set in 2016.
