Progression is the name of the game in cross country.
And there's no way better to look at development in this sport other than time. How far have some athletes improved over the course of their careers?
Take Horizon High School's Ashley McIntyre. She was 18th on her team as a freshman, moved up to No. 8 as a sophomore and then was on the varsity in her junior season, landing within the top seven. After one race, she's No. 4 on her team in 2019. Oh yeah, and she's already cut 13 minutes off her best effort from 2016.
That's the mark of a strong improvement over the course of a career.
Northern York's Marlee Starliper, meanwhile, was her team's No. 1 as a freshman. But her development came differently: She went from a very good runner to an elite one, cutting massive amounts of time.
