No. 4 Spokane North Central (WA)
Analysis: Starting the season at No. 4 has its owns pressures, but it's no fluke: The Indians are in the top 10 in at least one other national poll. And the numbers are pretty impressive.
But halt for a moment. It's no secret the defending WIAA Class 3A Champions -- who weren't tested all that much in Washington -- didn't race well at NXR Northwest, finishing fifth-overall. That didn't even put the squad in contention for a possible wildcard bid. This result, however, may toughen up a team that is hungry for more. The squad enters with the third best average in the country -- based on PRs from 2018 -- with an average time of 18:07.90 across its top five. No. 1 Allie Janke, who qualified for Foot Locker Nationals, is back and leads a group of seven that all return for 2019. Summit was the surprise of 2018. But another Pacific Northwest team might make some noise again in 2019.
Biggest question: Will North Central be able to capitalize on the hype?
There are two meets over the regular season where we might see just how good this team is. The first date will be at the end of September at Bob Firman, and then again in October at Nike Hole in the Wall. If North Central wants to make a statement, those two meets are the places to do it at.
