We took a look to see how this year's top shot put athletes stack up against the past four years.
So far in 2019 there has yet to be a female shot put athlete to break the 50-foot barrier. The current US No. 1 athlete in the shot put is South Hardin High School's (IA) Brylie Zeisneiss. Zeisneiss has come close to eclipsing the 50-foot mark with a throw of 48-feet 10-inches.
Top Athlete Each Year:
2019: Brylie Zeisneiss -- South Hardin High School (IA) -- 48-10
2018: Payden Montana -- Berwick (PA) -- 51-0
2017: Alyssa Wilson -- Donovan Catholic HS (NJ) -- 58-1
2016: Alyssa Wilson -- Donovan Catholic HS (NJ) -- 55-9.25
2015: Sophia Rivera -- Brentwood High Schoool (MO) -- 53-5.75
In the past five years, we've seen several athletes over the 50-foot mark by the end of the season. At the end of the 2016 season, there were seven girls who had thrown 50 feet or further. So far for 2019, there have only been eight girls to throw over 47 feet and none have hit 50 feet.
Number Of Girls Over 47 Feet:
2019: 8 (0) Over 50
2018: 22 (1)
2017: 28 (3)
2016: 30 (7)
2015: 26 (6)
So far in 2019 throwing anything over 43-11 will get you into the top 50, but in the four years prior you had to throw at a minimum 45-9. To be ranked inside the top 50 in the nation was the most competitive in 2016 when you had to throw 46-1 or better.
2019: 43-11
2018: 45-9.5
2016: 45-11
