The APU Meet of Champions Distance Classic at Azusa Pacific University has historically had some strong distance performances come from the boys and girls invitational races, and this year was no different.
In the invitational boys mile, Arroyo (CA) High School's Noah Hibbard and Newbury Park (CA) High School's Nico Young put on a show taking the race from the gun.
By the second lap, the duo had distanced themselves from the rest of the pack coming through halfway in 2:05. On the third lap with 500m to go, Young looked to be pushing the pace but Hibbard was right there holding on. Young would hold off Hibbard all the way down to the final 100 meters.
In that final home stretch, Hibbard passed Young on the outside to take the win at the line running 4:08.69 for US No. 2 in the mile. Young finished just a hair behind Hibbard running 4:08.82 for US No. 3 in the mile.
