The accolades keep coming for high school junior Athing Mu.
The Trenton Track Club (NJ) athlete broke the high school national record at 600 meters on Saturday at the USA Track and Field Indoor Championships in Staten Island, New York, winning her heat in 1:26.23 to surpass Rush Henrietta (NY) graduate Sammy Watson, who last set the national best in 2017 in 1:27.13.
Mu had the Midas Touch on Saturday, sprinting out to an early in 26.24 seconds before putting down a 29.20 second lap and closing in 30.80.
Mu, who had stated her desire to break the national record this weekend at the USA Indoor Championships, accomplished that feat without having to worry about it during the finals, where she'll have to contend with Nike athlete Raevyn Rogers and unattached runner Olivia Baker, who finished second and third, respectively.
Mu's performance was breathtaking from the gun and continued a theme of improvement for the junior, who scored personal bests of 1:28.54 and 1:27.36 at the distance in previous races at The VA Showcase and The Millrose Games.
It marked Mu's first overall national record in high school. She also owns junior class records in the 600m and 1K.
Mu was one of six qualifiers for the finals on Sunday and will aim for a national senior women's title.
