Over the last three years, Virginia's top short hurdlers have squared off more times than they can count.

But that competition has yielded the kind of progression both Shadajah Ballard and Kori Carter can be happy with. The Western Branch (VA) and Nansemond River (VA) senior athletes have dropped considerable time since they laced up as sophomores.

Coincidentally, their two schools are located just 10 miles apart.

Since 2017, Ballard has dropped 0.10 seconds from her overall 55mH PR in each season down to a state record in 2019. Carter, meanwhile, has cut 0.28 seconds from her best in 2017 to her top time this campaign.

And the season isn't finished just yet.

Beyond those two athletes, seven others have broken eight seconds in the 55mH, and all have dropped time over a three-year stretch.
