This week's Kick Of The Week comes to us from the Garden State.
At the Monmouth County Championships in Holmdel, New Jersey, the boys 1600m was a showdown last Wednesday evening. The race produced two of the top times in the state.
From the gun, it was a two-man race between Shore Regional High School's (NJ) Drew Maher and Christian Brothers Academy's (NJ) Tim McInerney. The duo ran one-two for the entire race. With 300m to go Maher looked to make a slight move to pull away from McInerney, but McInerney covered well holding on.
PLACE | ATHLETE | TEAM | RESULT | WIND | H# | |||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Tim McInerney | 11 | Christian Brothers Academy | 4:10.75 | 1 | |||
2 | Drew Maher | 12 | Shore Regional HS | 4:13.91 | 1 | |||
3 | Liam Hoagland | 12 | Colts Neck HS | 4:23.05 | 1 | |||
In fact, McInerney didn't just cover Maher's move -- he made a huge push of his own turning on the jets at the 200m mark. After that McInerney was gone, he opened his lead with each stride flying to a new New Jersey No.1 and US No. 19 time of 4:10.75. Maher finished second with a new NJ No. 3 time of 4:13.91.
Maher came back for revenge on Friday in the 800m where he flew to a blistering US No. 4 time of
1:50.73. Watch the 1600m kick above and check out Maher's full 800m race below.
