Pennsylvania native Dalton Hengst opened his outdoor season with an impressive performance at The Raleigh Relays, surging to the line in a new US No. 1 effort and career-best time of 3:50.18.
Running unattached, Hengst finished third overall in a men's field of collegiate athletes, just a second behind two others -- Aaon Weir and Jake Ogden -- who converted on sub-3:50 efforts.
It marked an improvement by over four seconds from his previous best from last summer at the Caribbean Scholastic Invitational, when he finished in a time of 3:54.90.
