* Brian Herron ran the US No. 6 all-time indoor mark in the 400m in December in Birmingham, Alabama
On the heels of one of the top all-time indoor seasons in recent memory, Atlanta Lakeside (GA) High junior Brian Herron is hoping to bookend his work with a trip to the World Championships in Birmingham, England.
Herron is entered and ranked sixth among American men in the 400 meters heading into the USA Indoor Championships this weekend in at the Albuquerque Convention Center in New Mexico. The championships begin Friday and go through Sunday.
But the Georgia high school star isn't the only prep athlete hoping for a bid to Worlds. In total, as many as five could compete at the USA Indoor Championships, though Lee's Summit (MO) High pole vaulter KC Lightfoot has not been accepted as of yet.
Herron will be joined by a talented contingent that includes three athletes from FK Elite in Colorado: triple jumper Sydnee Larkin, 60mH Emily Sloan and high jumper Anna Hall.
All three athletes from Colorado will have their work cut out for them. Larkin enters as the eighth best seed in the triple jump, Sloan is 13th seed in the 60mH and Hall is 10th in the high jump.
In most events, the top two individuals earn a qualification to the World Championships.
Another athlete was expected to compete this weekend, though a recent injury -- a twisted ankle -- will keep Germantown Academy (PA) senior Kyle Garland out of the championships. The USATF had accepted his entry, Garland's father, Keith, explained to MileSplit, even though the Georgia signee did not have the standard. That was based upon the high schooler's previous results at the Pan American Junior Games this past summer.
Herron, meanwhile, will face the best field he's ever competed against. American leader Marqueze Washington enters with a time of 45.24 seconds, while Dontavius Wright (45.50), Gil Roberts (45.80), Aldrich Bailey (46.20) and Fred Kerley (46.20) own the top five seeds entering the men's 400 meter field.
