The Skinny: From a national level there are three performers who could win. One of the biggest is St. Anthony (NY) High senior Mason Gatewood. The University of Pennsylvania signee competed at Foot Locker Nationals and has run 3:59.36 for 1500m so far, which ranks him U.S. No. 3 behind Poolesville (MD) High's Ryan Lockett and Bishop Shanahan (PA) High's Josh Hoey. His 1500m time was en route to the full mile at the Millrose Games Trials, where he ran 4:15.80 for U.S. No. 4 finishing second. Being the top guy in the field he will be looking to chase after Conor Lundy's 8:22.06 meet record. Anything under 8:32.11 would put him on the top 10 all-time list for the Yale Track Classic.
Gatewood is not the only big name to watch though as there are two other guys seeded with sub-8:40 marks. Cheshire (NY) High's Brendan Murray comes in with the second fastest seed time of 08:34.7. Murray ran 4:23.19 for the indoor mile last year at the Yale Track Classic. He was also the 16th-place finisher at last year's New Balance National Indoor Championships in 9:30.03.
The last and final guy with a seed time under 8:40 is Staples (CT) High's Ben Seiple, who hass run an indoor 3200m PR of 9:45.42 and an indoor 1600m PR of 4:26.27. Watch for him to be in the mix for a top five finish. Based on seed times, all three of these guys should be looking to chase after new U.S. No. 1 marks as Webb City (MO) High's Ryan Riddle currently holds it with a 8:34.14.
