Saratoga Springs (NY) High junior Kelsey Chmiel, 16, claimed her first international title on Saturday in Scotland, winning the women's junior 4K race at the Great Edinburgh International XCountry Challenge, crossing the line in a leading 14:10.00.
While Chmiel, the NXN runner-up, led Team USA to a great showing, the Americans came up just short in the team competition, falling to Great Britain by one point, 26-27, while Europe was third with 30 points.
Malibu (CA) High junior and Foot Locker champion Claudia Lane seventh overall in 14:30, while Glenbard West (IL) High's Katelynne Hart was ninth in 14:34 and Boise State's Emily Venters was 10th in 14:34. Michigan State's Maggie Farrell was 12th in 14:41 and Iowa State's Cailie Logue was 16th in 15:15.
The junior boys were led by Lyons Township (IL) High's Danny Kilrea, who finished fourth in the 6K race in 19:24. Aledo (TX) High's Graydon Morris was eighth in 19:47, Sandburg (IL) High's Dylan Jacobs, a recent Foot Locker Champion, was ninth in 19:49 and Homestead (WI) High's Drew Bosley was 11th in 19:57.
Lakota East (OH) High's Dustin Horter was 13th in 20:11 and Whitney Young (IL) High's Clayton Mendez was 15th in 20:24.
The Americans finished third with 32 points, behind second-place Great Britain (30) and first-place Europe (18).
