Garner junior Randolph Ross currently holds the U.S. No. 1 time in the 500m with his 1:04.97 from the NCRunners Holiday Invitational. See what he had to say about his training this year, goals for the season, and more below.
What are some of your goals individually and for your team this indoor season? What would it mean to win the 4A state team title?
Individually my goal is to win states in the 500, 300, and high jump, and our team goal is to win states overall -- but it would mean a lot to win the 4A title but in the end, I want to win nationals.
How has training been going? What have you been focused on?
Training has been going really well. Even with the weather being bad, I've still been training outside and my focus has been on the 500 this season.
I see that you compete or at least tried a lot of different events. Which event do you enjoy competing in most and why?
I enjoy competing in the 400 and high jump the most, because I see them and events that not everyone can do and most importantly they're fun.
Did you expect to run the U.S. No. 1 time in the 500m? What was your initial reaction when you hit that time?
I didn't expect to go that fast. It actually kind of surprised me, but when I saw it I was proud.
What's your plan for the rest of the indoor season? What are other big meets you're looking to run?
For the rest of the season, I plan to drop time in the 500 and prepare for states, and I also plan to run at the VA Showcase.
